2017-12-05pci: Rename root bus initialization functions for clarityDavid Gibson1-6/+6
pci_bus_init(), pci_bus_new_inplace(), pci_bus_new() and pci_register_bus() are misleadingly named. They're not used for initializing *any* PCI bus, but only for a root PCI bus. Non-root buses - i.e. ones under a logical PCI to PCI bridge - are instead created with a direct qbus_create_inplace() (see pci_bridge_initfn()). "megasas-gen2" already implements INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE, so add INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE only to "megasas". 2017-09-19cpu: make cpu_generic_init() abort QEMU on errorIgor Mammedov2-8/+0
Almost every user of cpu_generic_init() checks for returned NULL and then reports failure in a custom way and aborts process. Some users assume that call can't fail and don't check for failure, though they should have checked for it. In either cases cpu_generic_init() failure is fatal, so instead of checking for failure and reporting it various ways, make cpu_generic_init() report errors in consistent way and terminate QEMU on failure. 2017-05-23shutdown: Add source information to SHUTDOWN and RESETEric Blake1-1/+1
Time to wire up all the call sites that request a shutdown or reset to use the enum added in the previous patch. It would have been less churn to keep the common case with no arguments as meaning guest-triggered, and only modified the host-triggered code paths, via a wrapper function, but then we'd still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots; changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly categorized all callers. Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request causes an actual reset vs. a shutdown, it's easy to also add the information to reset requests. cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit efec3dd631d94160288392721a5f9c39e50fb2bc to replace no_user. It was supposed to be a temporary measure. When it was introduced, we had 54 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code. Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have 57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see the flag go away soon. Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field: user_creatable. 2017-02-21hw: Default -drive to if=ide explicitly where it worksMarkus Armbruster1-0/+1
Block backends defined with -drive if=ide are meant to be picked up by machine initialization code: a suitable frontend gets created and wired up automatically. if=ide drives not picked up that way can still be used with -device as if they had if=none, but that's unclean and best avoided. Unused ones produce an "Orphaned drive without device" warning. -drive parameter "if" is optional, and the default depends on the machine type. If a machine type doesn't specify a default, the default is "ide". Many machine types default to if=ide, even though they don't actually have an IDE controller. A future patch will change these defaults to something more sensible. To prepare for it, this patch makes default "ide" explicit for the machines that actually pick up if=ide drives: * alpha: clipper * arm/aarch64: spitz borzoi terrier tosa * i386/x86_64: generic-pc-machine (with concrete subtypes pc-q35-* pc-i440fx-* pc-* isapc xenfv) * mips64el: fulong2e * mips/mipsel/mips64el: malta mips * ppc/ppc64: mac99 g3beige prep * sh4/sh4eb: r2d * sparc64: sun4u sun4v Note that ppc64 machine powernv already sets an "ide" default explicitly. Its IDE controller isn't implemented, yet. We've currently got 18 architectures in QEMU, and thus 18 target-xxx folders in the root folder of the QEMU source tree. More architectures (e.g. RISC-V, AVR) are likely to be included soon, too, so the main folder of the QEMU sources slowly gets quite overcrowded with the target-xxx folders. To disburden the main folder a little bit, let's move the target-xxx folders into a dedicated target/ folder, so that target-xxx/ simply becomes target/xxx/ instead. 2016-03-22include/qemu/osdep.h: Don't include qapi/error.hMarkus Armbruster2-0/+2
Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. 2015-09-18Fix bad error handling after memory_region_init_ram()Markus Armbruster2-4/+4
Symptom: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456: upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory Aborted (core dumped) Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses &error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't abort when we can't allocate guest memory". The three places are: * memory_region_init_ram() Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing (bad) code may have created more. * memory_region_init_ram_ptr() The &error_abort is still there. * memory_region_init_rom_device() Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain. Correct, because the callers are realize() methods. Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a Coccinelle semantic patch: @r@ expression mr, owner, name, size, err; position p; @@ memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size, ( - &error_abort + &error_fatal | err@p ) ); @script:python@ p << r.p; @@ print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column) When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by &error_fatal. This is the fix. If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported: * ram_backend_memory_alloc() Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all handle the error sanely. * fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize() DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the call chain. We're good. Test case again behaves: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 qemu-system-x86_64: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory [Exit 1 ] The next commits will repair the rest of commit ef701d7's damage. This was done with the following script which generates a Coccinelle patch. Device models should access their block backends only through the block-backend.h API. Convert them, and drop direct includes of inappropriate headers. Just four uses of BlockDriverState are left: * The Xen paravirtual block device backend (xen_disk.c) opens images itself when set up via xenbus, bypassing blockdev.c. I figure it should go through qmp_blockdev_add() instead. * Device model "usb-storage" prompts for keys. No other device model does, and this one probably shouldn't do it, either. * ide_issue_trim_cb() uses bdrv_aio_discard() instead of blk_aio_discard() because it fishes its backend out of a BlockAIOCB, which has only the BlockDriverState. * PC87312State has an unused BlockDriverState[] member. Line wrapping muddies the waters a bit. I also omit tests whether dinfo->bdrv is null, because it never is. Many PCI host bridges consist of a sysbus device and a PCI device. You need both for the thing to work. Arguably, these bridges should be modelled as a single, composite devices instead of pairs of seemingly independent devices you can only use together, but we're not there, yet. Since the sysbus part can't be instantiated with device_add, yet, permitting it with the PCI part is useless. We shouldn't offer useless options to the user, so let's set cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet for them. It's already set for Bonito, Grackle, i440FX and Raven. Document why. Set it for the others: dec-21154, e500-host-bridge, gt64120_pci, mch, pbm-pci, ppc4xx-host-bridge, sh_pci_host, u3-agp, uni-north-agp, uni-north-internal-pci, uni-north-pci, and versatile_pci_host. We set default boot order "cad" in every single machine definition except "pseries" and "moxiesim", even though very few boards actually care for boot order, and "cad" makes sense for even fewer. Machines that care: * pc and its variants Accept up to three letters 'a', 'b' (undocumented alias for 'a'), 'c', 'd' and 'n'. Reject all others (fatal with -boot). * nseries (n800, n810) Check whether order starts with 'n'. Silently ignored otherwise. * prep, g3beige, mac99 Extract the first character the machine understands (subset of 'a'..'f'). Silently ignored otherwise. * spapr Accept an arbitrary string (vl.c restricts it to contain only 'a'..'p', no duplicates). * sun4[mdc] Use the first character. Silently ignored otherwise. Strip characters these machines ignore from their default boot order. For all other machines, remove the unused default boot order alltogether. Note that my rename of QEMUMachine member boot_order to default_boot_order and QEMUMachineInitArgs member boot_device to boot_order has a welcome side effect: it makes every use of boot orders visible in this patch, for easy review. At present, pci_nic_init() and pci_nic_init_nofail() assume that they will only create a NIC under the primary PCI root. As we add support for multiple PCI roots, that may no longer be the case. This patch adds a root bus parameter to pci_nic_init() (and updates callers accordingly) to allow the machine init code using it to specify the right PCI root for NICs created by old-style -net nic parameters.
